This figure appears in African Sculpture by William Fagg (1969) 99, cat. no. 110 with the following caption & text: "Figure of a Man. H. 13 inches. The British Museum, London. This figure, acquired for the British Museum in 1871 (from another English collection) by the Keeper of Antiquities, the great Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks, clearly belongs to the Makonde complex, but also embodies in its deeply incised decoration, based on long rows of triangles, equally clear influence from the Arab culture of the coast. It is thought to have come from Manganja, near Kilwa Kisiwani, the greatest Arab metropolis on the coast of Tanzania; this is within the territory of the Wangindo, but it has probably been long since impossible to determine whether this was really a product of this culture, or was intrusive."
